The science dealing with construction materials has created a new type of concrete, the self-compacting or self-consolidating concrete which is ideal for earthquake resistant structures that have narrow spaced reinforcement. It is a kind of ‘gravel-concrete’ (with aggregates ranging from 12 to 16 mm). It contains 4th generation plasticizers and has a strength equal or greater than C25/30. Its slump height is far greater than the S5 class (therefore its workability is determined by the spread test). It literally flows inside the formwork and it does not need vibration.
Self-consolidated Concrete (SCC) which is also known as self-compacting concrete has high flowability, passing ability, and stability. It is non-segregating concrete that spreads into place, and fills formwork without any mechanical consolidation. SCC is specified for both horizontal and vertical applications.
Usage of Self-consolidated Concrete:
- It can be used for slabs, elevated decks, ultrathin floors (typically used in condo projects), radiant flooring, and repair toppings/overlays.
- In vertical applications, SCC is used for walls, new columns and repairs to columns and bridge decks.
